Olympic Football at Newcastles St James Park

It really is an exciting time now that the nine matches Newcastle will be hosting for the Olympic Football 2012 have been announced. There will be 6 in the mens competition and 3 in the ladies.

The opening game will kick off on Thursday July 26th at 2.30pm and will see Mexico v South Korea this is the first half of a double match with the second match seeing Gabon v Switzerland at 5.15pm.

Interactive artwork installation ~Flow arrives in Newcastle

~Flow has arrived in Newcastle and it setting up home on the fantastic Newcastle Quayside next to the Millennium Bridge… What on earth is FLOW I hear you ask?

~Flow is a unique piece of floating art. At its heart is a tide mill that uses a water wheel to convert energy from the Tyne river current to power interactive instruments on board.

It opens on Sunday 25th March at 12.00 noon with a special evening of music planned in collaboration with The Sage Gateshead and the Gateshead International Jazz Festival. Visitors to ~Flow will be able to board the installation for free and alter the instruments to create magical new tunes.

~Flow will also play a part in the Olympic celebrations when it arrives in Newcastle later this year.

2012 Olympic Troch will visity Newcastle on 15th June

Newcastle upon Tyne will be one of the prized locations of the Olympic Torch Relay in June 2012 as it embarks on an epic journey around the UK ahead of the London 2012 Games.

Newcastle is one of 69 evening celebration stops announced as preparations for the games step up a gear. The Torch Relay will come to Newcastle on Friday 15th June 2012 as the games arrive on our doorstep in dramatic style.
An evening celebration event will be staged in Newcastle as the greatest sporting show on earth comes to Newcastle for the first time. The evening will feature shows and entertainment and the Tyne Bridge will take centre stage as the torch is transferred by zip-wire down onto the Quayside – giving the torch relay the VIP treatment as it arrives on doorstep.

The main Olympic event is of course what Newcastle is famous for “football” and this will be hosted at the fabulous St James Park which is the oldest and largest football stadium in the North East of England and is the 6th largest stadium in the UK.

The City will share a key role in hosting the Olympic football tournament, with St James Park staging nine matches over 6 days between 26th July and 4th August which will include the mens quarter final.

Newcastle's Chinatown is 5 minutes walk from Premier Apartments

Chinese New Year is just around the corner and celebrations start in Newcastle on the 29th January to begin the Year of the Dragon (龍 年).

Chinese New Year celebrations starts at 11am at the Chinese Arch on Stowell Street, less than 5 minutes walk from us. Watch the traditional Dragon, Lion and Unicorn dancers perform, also on Stowell Street there will be an exhibition from the North East Chinese Association presenting Chinese costume, food, arts and crafts.

On Thornton Square, right outside Premier Apartments, there will be the Chinese Market and Fairground featuring traditional arts, and crafts and delicious Chinese food!

At the Bath Lane Stage there will be speeches from key representatives of the Chinese community and Newcastle City Council.

At 12 noon there is a unique ceremony to witness the Eye Dotting Ceremony of the New Chinese Dragon. The ceremony ensures the new year is a prosperous and successful one and wakes the Dragon from his slumber to the sound of fire crackers.

The day continues with further activities with Chinese Zodiac, Children’s Marquee, and the Lion Dance at 4pm distributing lucky money.

Newcastle City Marina

September has seen an exciting new development to Newcastle’s iconic Quayside – the arrival of the Newcastle City Marina. The Marina is a permanent new facility to attract boat owners, and their crews, into the city centre.

This £300,000 project sees over 130 linear metres of pontoons installed on the Quayside directly opposite The Sage and will offer short term berthing for yachts and power boats up to 40′ in length. NE1 Ltd has led this project, also attracting £125 000 of match funding from the City Council, to further enhance the Quayside and provide a new attraction for River Tyne based boats, and those from further afield including Norway and Holland.

The city centre provides a high quality and attractive destination for boat owners; visitors will be greeted by the NE1 Street Rangers and their boats kept safe by a 24hr CCTV system and a secure access gate.

Turner Prize 2011 – Arguably the most recognized and prestigious award for contemporary art, the Turner Prize presents the very best of current British art and what better venue to see all of this other then the Baltic Centre for Contemporary Art. The Turner Prize arrives on Friday 21st October until Sunday 8th January 2012.

The Metro Centre one of Europes largest indoor shopping centres has been welcoming people through its doors for the last 25 years and has continued to expand with additions such as the Leisure complex, the Metrocentre Qube and continues to be one of the nations favourite shopping centres for years to come.

Tyneside Irish Festival is back for its 25th year, to celebrate Irish Culture on Tyneside with all sorts on offer from the Emerald Ball to a whole host of bands, ceilies, story telling, folk music sessions, drama, film, and music workshops. Highlights include Pogues tribute, The Wildcats of Kilkenny, the Sharon Shannon Band and Brendan Shine.

This weekend sees the Great North Run with approx 54,000 runners taking part in this event. It’s the most iconic half marathon on the planet and takes place this Sunday 18th September 2011.
